An exceptionally sharp reverse
Lot 4557
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 18 mm, 2.91 g, 3 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Arelate, irregular mint, after 325. CONSTANT-[INV]S AVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. VIRTV-S AVGG / PA RL Campgate with open doors and four turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC 291 (for prototype). An attractive with an exceptionally sharp reverse. Minor areas of weakness on the obverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, privately acquired from Spink & Son on 2 September 1999.

The style of this coin is clearly unofficial, as indicated by the crude lettering, the incomplete mint mark, and the hairstyle of Constantine, indicating that it is a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation.
